Did Jenny Sanford basically just advocate for slavery? How awkward.
musings, 1
Before I start cracking on what I have to do today, which seems like a lot right now, I have a couple of thoughts.
1. I have come to relish coffee. Do they have some sort of additive that they mix into the coffee blend. I have gotten to the point where I give a sigh (of happiness??) each time I get Vanilla Hazelnut from Einsteins Bagels. It is also a constant reminder that I need to figure out how to make my own coffee.
2. On tips and the service sector: I read a reader’s response to Andrew Sullivan’s blog about why people tip and he made the point of “if I can’t afford to tip well, then I can’t afford to eat out.” That sounds pretty reasonable to me on a personal normative level, but if everyone held that view, then perhaps many of the people who would go out to eat would stop (given that their opportunity cost now is too high). Then the large number of meager tips that the waiter originally had might not add up to the smaller number of larger tips that the waiter has now. Just a thought.
I have worked briefly in the service sector. I was a shake maker at Steak n Shake, and I also parked cars. Both times, however, I did the work so I could have a little bit of spending money at school rather than to support myself. Thus, any tip I got/the paycheck I received was just extra money in a cup that was already pretty full. Thinking back on it though, if I worked full time at those jobs, I would probably have to find extra part-time employment just to make it somewhat manageable. Moral of the story? I am not sure, maybe I should start tipping more (or eating out less).

Paraphrased from a particularly awesome This American Life episode titled “Somewhere Out There”:
Problem: Estimate the likelihood of finding a girlfriend. Use mathematics a la the Drake equation as a model for exercise, just replace intelligent life with girlfriends. Parameters: (1) lives in Boston (2) a woman from the age of 20-40 (3) has graduated from college (4) who is available (5) is attractive [suppose a relatively high attracted-ness threshold, like 1 out of 5 women are attractive]
Solution: 2,500 women (out of an initial number of 600,000 people)
A veritable needle in a haystack. And that is not even counting religion, personality, compatibility, and all of that. With such probability, it is hard to imagine that anybody finds anybody in this world. It is a pretty fascinating exercise, but it seems like a particularly scientific approach. Sobering nonetheless.
sim, cartola, sim
Cartola is a badass.
Sim,
Deve haver o perdão
Para mim
Senão nem sei qual será
O meu fim
Para ter uma companheira
Até promessas fiz
Consegui um grande amor
Mas eu não fui feliz
E com raiva para os céus
Os braços levantei
Blasfemei
Hoje todos são contra mim
Todos erram neste mundo
Não há exceção
Quando voltam a realidade
Conseguem perdão
Porque é que eu Senhor
Que errei pela vez primeira
Passo tantos dissabores
E luto contra a humanidade inteira
